Codsall in Wartime
Our tribute marking the 80th Anniversary of D-Day
Eighty years ago, on June 6th, 1944, Allied troops landed on the coast of Normandy, at the start of a campaign to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. It was a crucial turning point in the Second World War. Meanwhile, back home in Codsall, life was carrying on under wartime restrictions. It was a very different and often frightening period in the lives of residents and one which they would never forget.
To mark this momentous occasion, the History Society feels that this is the ideal time to republish a book we produced in 1994, drawing on the memories of residents of Codsall and Bilbrook who could recall living through the Second World War. Their first-hand experiences were recorded for posterity in this 70-page A4 sized book which has been sold by the Society in the years since. However, for the last two years, it has been out of print and no longer available.
We are now able to offer it again, this time as a free download in PDF format. Because of the size of the document, we have split it into two parts, the first runs from Chapter 1 to Chapter 6 and the second, from Chapter 7 to the end.
The History Society is very grateful to Anton Jenkins, one of our members, who scanned in our remaining copy and converted it into PDF format in time for the D-Day Anniversary. We are delighted to be able to share it with you in this way. Click on the images below to access the book, which will open in a separate window:
